To start - I'm a beginning drummer, and this is my first acoustic drum set.
I purchased this as a Lightning Deal for Christmas, so it was a bit of an impulse buy, and is yet to be used. Wanting to know the *value* of the deal, I did some quick searching and was unable to find ANYTHING on Pearl CenterStage series drums, not even on the Pearl site. The price was fair for what I expected to receive, and I thought "it's Pearl, so it must be good", right?!?
In preparation, and being confused by the product page, lack of info on the internets, and Lightning Deal listing being cut-off at "(cymbals...", I wanted to know if cymbals are included (or not). Based on what I saw, and what I know about buying drums - which, again, is relatively little - I assumed that cymbals were not included. However, the term "shell pack" (i.e. drums only) was not used anywhere on the product page. I contacted Amazon customer service and was told - "it shows cymbals in the picture, so they are included". I was doubtful that this reasoning is correct, because shell packs are often pictured in complete setup form, and don't include hardware (stands, throne, pedal, etc.) OR cymbals. I sent the same question via email and received no response.
The boxes (3 in total) arrived, with very nice, large "Pearl CenterStage Series" insignias (Made in Taiwan). The hardware box had basic Pearl text. One of the boxes had the pack list from Pearl to Amazon, and listed the part numbers of the hardware pack. Searching again, I found NOTHING for the hardware pack components. They are all 60 series numbers, so I assume they are more lightweight than even the 700 series bits.
I opened the boxes to have a look at the drums to make sure all will be well on Christmas morning. I have to say - again, being new to drums - that I was impressed with the perceived quality of the drums. The finish work seemed very nice, and very clean. The 9-ply shells were very *thick* and the heads are Pearl clear. The sticks look to be trash. ;) The packaging was very good and should prevent shipping damage under normal conditions.
As expected, there are no cymbals. Being a beginner, and on a budget, I am looking into the Meinl HCS, Sabian SBr, or Zildjian ZBT. Just be aware that good (albeit beginner) cymbals are expensive in relation to the cost of this drum set. Any of those listed above will be $100+ for a set of hi-hats and one crash/ride - there is no boom stand included in this kit, so it only has provisions for one crash/ride.
I'm happy with what I received for the price I paid, but I would shop around if the price is more than $500, knowing you get lightweight hardware, no boom stand, and no cymbals.
